The opening of the new histopathology laboratory at 1000 Discovery Drive marks an exciting new chapter for Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and its specialist diagnostic teams.
Located at the heart of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the new laboratory provides a state-of-the-art working environment for the biomedical scientists and histopathology specialists who study tissue samples to help diagnose cancer and other diseases, supporting the care of thousands of patients every year.
Tecnilabo is proud to have contributed to the delivery of this important healthcare project, providing specialist laboratory equipment, technical expertise and dedicated project management to help create a safe, efficient and future-ready diagnostic facility.
Working closely with SDC, Tecnilabo’s Project Management Team was responsible for delivering specialist laboratory solutions for the fourth-floor histopathology facility within the five-storey, 105,000 sq. ft life sciences building.
The project required high-performance Class II cabinets and fume hoods from our Bioair line, designed around complex diagnostic workflows and the specific requirements of laboratory end users.
Every unit was carefully engineered and customised to meet the needs of the NHS team.
The solutions incorporated enhanced extraction systems and workflow-specific utility connections, as well as full integration with the laboratory’s unique formalin dispensing and disposal system - currently the only system of its kind in use within an NHS histopathology service.
By translating detailed end-user requirements into technically robust and fully compliant solutions, Tecnilabo helped ensure the laboratory environment would support both the immediate operational needs of the histopathology team and the long-term demands of a modern diagnostic service.
Delivering specialist laboratory equipment into an active construction environment presented significant logistical challenges.
Restricted access, the laboratory’s fourth-floor location and the need to coordinate with multiple teams on site required careful planning and clear communication throughout every stage of the project.
Tecnilabo’s Project Management Team coordinated the delivery, positioning and connection of each unit with precision.
Despite the challenging site conditions, all equipment was safely transported to the fourth floor, installed in its designated location and connected without damage to either the equipment or the building.
Close collaboration with BioAir SpA and other project partners helped maintain technical accuracy, resolve challenges efficiently and keep the installation progressing smoothly.
Installation was only one part of the project.
Before the laboratory could become operational, every system needed to demonstrate that it met the required safety, performance and compliance standards.
Tecnilabo completed comprehensive airflow testing, safety checks and performance verification before providing full certification of the installed equipment.
This compliance-led approach gave the NHS histopathology team confidence that their specialist laboratory equipment was ready to support safe and effective diagnostic operations from day one.
